Welcome to

The Green League of Broward

Thank you for taking a moment to see what the Green League is all about.

Since January 2007, we have been organizing a network for environmental groups and activists to share information on resources, events and action alerts, requests for help with environment-related issues, press releases and such. It is our belief that the environmental community can be most effective when we work together on our common concerns and lend our hands and voices to each other's specific areas of action.

We recognize that the many groups and individuals in our community have varying priorities, stands on issues, and diverse approaches to addressing our common concerns. Therefore, the Green League does not take positions on specific issues. Instead we offer an opportunity to all our members to present their information, events and action alerts through the following:

  • A monthly forum for environmental education, networking and social interaction.
  • A moderated googlegroup for direct discussions among members.
  • E-mail distribution of calendar Updates, and a Blotter of interesting local and global information sent in by our members.
  • An interactive web-site with local calendar and links

In addition, we host or take part in various events and actions such as the Step It Up campaign, Earth Day, training seminars, MeetUp groups and expos.

Membership is free and open to all.

The Green League of Broward - Leadership Advisory Board

Our Leadership Advisory Board is made up of volunteer members who provide input to the Directors to make wise decisions, as our organization moves forward. An experiment in alternative leadership, the GLoB LAB functions primarily using a GoogleGroup, rather than a board meeting with Rules of Order and such. This "organic" approach to leadership has worked well for us, as most of the leadership are far too involved in their own areas of advocacy, education, and profession to sacrifice one more night for a meeting.

Recently reorganized from having a single Director, Michael O'Brien, with four Assistant Director positions, we currently have four Directors who share the leadership responsibilities, weigh the input of the group, and make a final decision on items that the LAB considers.  The four Director positions are:

Director of Programming - Randy Hilliard
Director of Education - Julee Felinski
Director of Outreach - Jim Ryan
Director of Community - Steve Jens-Rochow

Dir. of Programming: This position handles logistical arrangements, volunteer supervision, tabling at events, setup and leading our monthly meetings. This person also maintains the Green League "box of goodies," banner and display board, keeps the literature organized and updated, and looks for new items to display.

Dir. of Education: The primary responsibility of this position is to read, discern and upload to the website the various articles, announcements, events, information and resources that we receive via e-mail.  This position also prepares and emails the GLoB Blotter - containing Action Alerts and relevant items - on a periodic basis.

Dir. of Outreach: This role involves finding new ways to reach the thousands of "greenies" in the county with whom we have not yet made contact. Ideas for this include setting up Green League pages on Facebook, MySpace, and wherever social networking would help up reach new people, radio interviews, blogs, and making personal contacts with green businesses to get flyers into circulation.

Dir. of Community: This person hosts meetings and encourages fellowship to build a sense of community.  In-home fellowship groups, such as The Simplicity Circle, can be very powerful community builders, have different areas of focus/purpose, and take on whatever form that works. This Director also coaches/mentors other group leaders in building their own home fellowships.
